Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of Mary (A)

Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24. What remarkable characteristics of St. Joseph should every husband and father try to develop and possess? In the gospels, Joseph utters not a single word, but he is in no way described as weak and passive. In fact, what we see is a man who actively consents and cooperates in the salvific action of God. He allows himself to be guided by angels who appeared to him in dreams. This is the gospel’s way of describing God’s loving intervention in the life of the family of Nazareth. Joseph is always driven to do what is right and just because he is a man who readily listens to God and obeys His will. May all husbands and fathers emulate the example of St. Joseph by praying regularly, listening intently, and obeying God faithfully!
